Lionel Lodge in 1999

tides come

Seven years ago Lionel Lodge left Canada and his record deal with BMG Canada and started touring around Europe, meeting local players to record the last two of his now four Cds. "It was time for a change, personally and musically."

First stop was England where he put together a loud electric band that was said to be a mixture of The Pixies and Stax Volt. With this four piece band his third CD, `Sister, was recorded. Instead of accepting offers from Chrysalis Records and Virgin Records he continued traveling, going around England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, meeting and working with local players. By the end of this period he recorded his fourth CD, Naked, with a six piece, mainly acoustic band. "The band on `Naked is a mixture of Irish, Scottish and English players, I'm very proud of that CD. It worked so easily.

tides roll
But the need for more traveling and musical exploring was still calling, so he went to France
then Spain, Greece and through a strange twist of events, after a couple years, ended up in
Vienna.

"I've met a lot of great players here, people like Hans Theessink, Rens Newland, Ingrid
Oberkanis (from the Vinnna Art Orchestra), Othmar Binder and Gajus Stappen. Playing with
these people has been a joy and an honour. The new CD is coming along very well. I have been
working very closely with these players in the studio while occassionally taking a break to do
a live show. Sometimes we need to just get out and play the songs for people."

After alittle more then a year in Vienna, a year of meeting local musicians, playing live, radio
and television shows and numerous recording sessions for his fifth CD, Lionel Lodge flew back
to Toronto, Canada, with Viennese musician Gajus Stappen, for two very successful
homecoming shows and the release of the new single You're All I Want'.But the need for more traveling and musical exploring was still calling, so he went to France
then Spain, Greece and through a strange twist of events, after a couple years, ended up in
Vienna.

tides raise my soul
Throughout 1998 Lionel worked in Austria with many different musicians,
some of Vienna`s finest, playing live and recording. This process has
refined the material and the expanded the scope of possible arrangements.
The songs destined to be on Lionels 5th CD have been pushed through a
variety of social and musical filters, imaginations and cultural backdrops.

The year ended with Lionel back in Canada, for the first time in 7 years.
After a couple Welcome-Home showcase gigs Lionel was back in a studio,
recording drum tracks with his brother, Brodie Lodge. Brodie was the
drummer I grew up with, we started playing music together,so it was great
to take the songs back to him and hear him play them, he had instinctual
appreciation for where I want to take the songs. The hardest thing was
finding a drummer who would understand how I wanted the rhythms to
push and pull the songs. Now I have him on tape!

1999 begins with Lionel going into a private studio in Vienna with the
master tapes recorded in Canada and a wealthy resource of fine Viennese
players all very familar with the material. This is my 5th one but I really
see it as my first. Over the last 7 years I have absored so much from my
travels that I see the other Cds as part of the learning. Now its time to
show what I can do.
